No one said it was going to be easy and no one thought I’d be 30wks pregnant when I offered to make their wedding cake as our gift to the couple… not even me. In hindsight buying a vase would have been so much simpler but I’m so glad I put on my brave face and did it for them. Baking and basic construction was done in the days leading up to the wedding, I couldn’t imagine doing it on my own in a strange kitchen the day before, plus I think it would have given the bride a heart attack. The most stressful part was getting it to the venue undamaged, in two pieces… in a maxi taxi. Throw in a couple of fake “Whoops, I almost dropped it” jokes from friends and placing the top tier on the base, touching up the icing and placing the flowers as the Bride & Groom make their entrance and you’ve got once stressed out, swollen pregnant lady. Why oh why doesn’t Darwin have Michel’s Patisserie???
Then the planets align and my masterpiece is complete. The frosting doesn’t melt off, the top tier doesn’t buckle and the orchids don’t go brown. The reception venue was outside and I was a little worried about how the frosting would go in the evening heat but other than getting a glossy sheen it was fine… phew! The gorgeous cake toppers are white ceramic doves bought online from HERE and they were so perfect and will look great as decoration in their home.
Told you it was big! I’ll always remember their faces and the hugs I got when they saw the cake. Such a special moment, worth the stress and kilos of icing sugar. The professional photographer took a photo of me and the happy couple with the cake but I’ll have to wait for her to email it. I’m 80% sure I’d offer to make another wedding cake in the future as long as I got to cook in the comfort of my own kitchen but for now I’m looking forward to making LM’s birthday cakes!
