Full Throttle

I decided I wanted to make my sister (my one & only) a cute handbag for her birthday. I could easily go out and buy her things or send her money but I knew that this year, with all the brave choices she’s made lately, would appreciate a lovingly made gift more. She could cart it around with her when she made even more brave choices and know I love and support her, the bag would be a wearable hug. I chose her favourite colours and asked what style she’d like, “a normal sized handbag with a super long strap“, too easy.
Then I wandered innocently into my op shop and found some cute vintage fabrics. The yellow roses reminded me of my Mum so I’m making something for her. I’ve been scouring the net for cute projects and I’ve found quite a few, I just have to pick one. I’m so excited to give it new life.
I also found this gorgeously soft cotton gelato striped double bed sheet and as soon as I saw it my head was reeling with ideas. It instantly took me back to my childhood and I just love looking at it… I just have to figure out how to use it to it’s full potential.
After a bit of a flat week I picked myself up yesterday at the quilt shop. I bought lots of interfacing,  stocked up on some new threads, a magnetic clip for Stephanie’s bag and played with some new fabrics. I love mixing up old with new. The blue swirly fabric at the bottom is an op shop pillowcase and when I saw the dotty blue green fabric I knew it was meant to be. I’ll be making something just for me out of these beauties.
The quilt shop wraps up all their fat quarters into tissue sized bundles and put them in baskets all over the shop, like little lollies. When you go in, it really is like a candy store, you just stand there drooling over it all. I love bright colours and patterns, especially the blue batik flower print. The flowers are edged in gold foil paint, so beautiful and only $2.50, still thinking of things to do with it. The orange and pink retro print is so funky, I knew straight away that I wanted to make a purse out of it.
I was about to leave the shop when I saw this new collection of fabric, I fell in love… hard. I knew straight away that I wanted to make Aidan something special from it, something that would do the fabric justice and that Aidan would keep forever. I’ll share more very soon because it’s for his birthday which is only 10 days away now… crap, better get to it then!

ooh I can't wait to see your projects!

One of my loves of moving to our new place is having a spot where I can have my sewing machine set up full time…
