There were some things I expected to arrive in my PO Box last week, but jars of Vegemite wasn’t one of them! A PR company had sent me a jar of their brand new “My First Vegemite” to try out. Now, I must admit that I believe you shouldn’t mess with a classic and to me that’s exactly what Vegemite is, a classic. Australian’s raised in the last eighty odd years were practically fed it from birth and I definitely remember the daily Vegemite sandwich squished up against my popper in my lunchbox at school.
They’ve now brought out a revised version with 50% less sodium, added iron and vitamins B6 and B12 which is obviously better for the little ones. We had Monica and Brock over for a play date so I knocked up a few sandwiches for the boys. I did this little “Spreadibility Comparision” for you because I found the consistency of the My First Vegemite to be more glossy and syrupy compared to the classic version. It spread easily but I could tell it was going to be different.
The boys didn’t like it. Monica didn’t mind it but said it had a different after-taste to it, a lot milder. Me… not a fan. I think we’ve all just been so accustomed already to the classic, I’m sure that if the “My First Vegemite” was the one he’d grown up eating he wouldn’t have batted an eyelid and gobbled it all down but my son has a smart palette and noticed the difference and promptly demanded a replacement sandwich and some grated cheese. Vegemite is such an original product and I don’t like it when they mess with it but I do appreciate the concern for our children’s health which is why I’m sharing it. To all those mum’s who are of the verge of introducing Vegemite to their tots maybe give this a whirl.
Three lucky people will get the chance to try My First Vegemite for free, all you have to do to enter is leave a comment telling me “What does vegemite make you think of?“. Just be sure to include your email address so I can contact you if you win.

The Happy Little Vegemite song and ad!
Atleast the new one has low sodium! We have Mightymite in our house as it is Gluten Free. Took a bit to get used to but now it tastes the same.
Vegemite was always the thing that my Mum gave me when I was sick. So it makes me think of being cared for and loved, nawww.
Love that you have the same highchair! Has Aidan had a haircut? He looks so grown up compared to Charlie wh still has baby hair!
Vegemite is my comfort food, vegemite on toast after I have been sick or feeling down in the dumps always picks up my spirits and makes me feel better.
yeah, let me first say that I personally like and eat moderate amounts of Vegemite, and I know it's a bit gutsy of me to attack an Australian icon, but I really don't understand how, today!, they are even allowed to bring out a product for children with 10 to 15 times more sodium than what is generally defined by gov and health institutions as 'low sodium' product.
I posted about that in February "Happy little Vegemite might still die of a stroke."
http://bit.ly/epsA2k Sorry, but SALT is one of the most vicious health threats for our kids today.
LESS sodium than the original vegemite. NOT Low Sodium. Big difference there.
Vegemite reminds me of being an Australian.
I wasn't sure when I heard about this- after the iSnack 2.0 debacle. My toddler loves regular Vegemite and Cheesymite. I don't think I would bother with this. Vegemite is just a staple in our house. When we were kids all the Aussie kids had either "vaginamite" or "penis butter" on their sandwiches for lunch!
Low/less, all a good thing!
Reminds me of WORMS!!!! nothing beats vitaweet, butter (has to be butter not marg) and Vegemite. Smoshed done til worms come out the top. Ah stuff memories are made of.
It reminds me of my messy little eaters!
Totally agree that original is best.. Still not a fan of cheesymite although Byron seems to enjoy it, wonder what he will think of this one!
I have some in the cupboard as I have an Auzzie girl living with me (in Canada). Should I try it….hmmm. Doesn't look or smell very appealing to the untrained eye, but then again neither does smoked oysters and I LOVE them. Okay dare me.
