Magazine Junkie

I’ve always found magazines to be so alluring and seductive. Growing up in the Northern Territory there was very little glitter and glamour, more dust and dirt than anything else. The pages of a magazine were a stark contrast to the life I lived as a teen and although I loved my upbringing and the community there, a teenage girls heart does dream of what it would be like to live in that kind of life. To this day every time I see a magazine I just want to pick it up and take it home with me.
My taste in magazines varies with my life. I think I bought every single Australian and international wedding magazine when I was planning my own wedding over the 18 month period and surprisingly the $15-$20 price tag for each copy still didn’t put me off. I loved them so much I contemplated starting my own… it’s still on my to-do list. When I first Steve I read a lot of “Donna Hay” magazine until I decided trying to become a stepford wife wasn’t really for me, although I did learn to cook some pretty fancy meals and still reference old copies to this day.
One magazine I’ve loved for almost it’s entire existence is “Real Living“. It gets me and my stingy budget, my rental agreement and my love of upcycling old furniture and peeking into strangers homes to steal their style… they just get me! I’ve been subscribing for so long I feel like I’m on a first name basis with the editorial team even though they have no idea who I am. Hmm… maybe I should email Deb and set up an “interview”, how cool would that be!
I love it when they come in their little clear plastic sleeves to my mail box, all crisp and new, always ahead of the newsstands. A little like VIP treatment as far as I’m concerned. Sometimes I’ll save it for a bad day, when I really need to zone out or I’ll tear it open right there at the letterbox and quickly flip through the pages. Most times though I see it as my evening off. I won’t blog, instead I’ll run a bath and sit in warm bubbly water for an hour or more, topping up the hot water and devouring the pages.
As I flipped through this weeks “Grazia” (my new weekly obsession) I decided to look up how much it would be to subscribe to that one as well, apparently “Aidan” has been stuck on what to get me for Mothers Day. Considering “Aidan” gets me my other subscriptions for Christmas each year, maybe “he” should do it for Mothers Day as well!
Then I saw that if I subscribed in time for Mothers Day I’d go into the draw to win a trip for two to Italy! Instantly I imagined Steve and I jet-setting across the globe, a stop over in Dubai, visiting wineries, eating our favourite food and making love absolutely everywhere because of course Aidan would be at Grandma and Grandpas back home in Australia.
Then it got me thinking about my own Mum and maybe she’d like the chance to win an Italian getaway with Dad and as a sweetener, a magazine subscription too! Mum has read “Women’s Weekly” for as long as I can remember, she’s so great at all the crosswords and brain teasers but she never made any of the recipes as far as I can remember. What I love about subscribing (besides getting your hands on each issue before most people) is that it’s a gift that gives all year long. It would be like a hug for Mum from me every month… aww that sounds nice.

The decision was made I was feeling pretty damn proud of myself too. A “Womans Weekly” subscription for Mum and a “Grazia” subscription for me… pretty scented soaps and embroidered hankies optional.

A magazine subscription is the perfect Mother’s Day gift! Subscribe now to Woman’s Weekly or to a lifestyle magazine and you could win a trip of a lifetime to Italy.

I love the colours in those photos Dani – nice set styling!
Ooh, and i also love magazines although because we cant afford a lot of " luxuries " the only ones i buy are cooking magazines. I read the gossip rags at my mums and my sister gives me her copies of Cleo and Cosmo when she's finished with them… yay for being thrifty!

Since you're a bit of a magazine junkie (like me!) I'm wondering if you remember B Magazine?? It was an Australian publication in the late 90's early 2000's aimed at the 20 – 30 year old market I think. Had fashion, celeb interviews etc..

I can't find anyone else who remembers this magazine and am starting to think I imagined it!!

I grew up in Central West NSW. It was a 30km drive from the nearest shop. Waiting for my favourite monthly mag to finally arrive at the newsagent was torturous (always late), and was always read within a day.

The photos remind me of those cheesy advertorials you see at 2 am in the morning!

Love the action shot of Aidan!!

I love magazines, but these days I just get Shop til I drop, Shop for kids & Studio Bambino.
But that is only because the others don't hit the spot.

Magazines really are so much fun! They are something I try and spoil myself with every grocery shop. Usually just ending up putting a $4 gossip mag in my trolley as that is all I can afford. I've never actually had a magazine subscription, but now that you've mentioned it, my birthday is coming up & I've been at a loss when asked "What do you want?"

I'll always be a lover of high fashion glossies… The e-zine is just not the same as seeing those pages in their printed glory… they feel so much more special!

You completed a number of nice points there. I did a search on the issue and found nearly all people will have the same opinion with your blog. 37982
