I never liked car races, they didn’t interest me, I didn’t “get’ them but when the PR company for the V8 Supercars emailed me offering free tickets to the Telstra Sydney 500 I knew someone who did like them, who did “get” car racing so I accepted the tickets and prepared to share the good news with my friend.
I saw it as a good opportunity to share an experience, doing something they loved and I’d never been to a car race before so I’d be doing something new and out of my comfort zone… maybe it would convert me?
I received four general admission tickets which got us around the grounds as well as entry into the paddock. When I told Monica I was taking her, Brock and her partner Geoff she couldn’t believe it and was so excited, giving never felt so awesome.
Steve and Aidan were away on holidays, children under 12 were free so we had one spare ticket and as the race just happened to be on Geoff’s birthday I told him he could bring along a friend. Geoff bought along his mate Dave and let me tell you, they had an awesome time despite the constant rain.
Soon after arriving the boys went off on their own and Monica and I looked at the exhibits.
There was a Lady Gaga car with an extreme paint job, they were working on it whilst we were there!
As well as looking at lots of pretty cars we lined up and had some posters signed.
Don’t ask me who anyone is, I was just taking the photos and occasionally chasing Brock.
After the signings we headed off the kids area but it was mainly for bigger kids.
We all posed with Mack the Truck, isn’t he cute!
Then it was time to shelter from the rain for a bit and have some lunch… mmm burgers.
Fashion on the Track? Check out her shoes!
Ponchos were also a big fashion statement, everyone was wearing them daaaaaaaarling!
Several hours later we found the boys, soaked from the rain and just a little bit tipsy. It was time for the last race to begin and we were at the fence right at the starting line. I stood back and soaked it all in, watching my friends enjoying the moment, car racing a shared passion for their little family… go Holden!
This was the closest we’d been the track all day and Brock wasn’t a fan, it was way too loud. I’d forgotten to bring along Aidan’s EM4K to protect his ears, if you take kids to the races (or any other loud environment) I highly recommend them. Soon after we left the boys to continue watching the race and headed home. The tickets granted them free transit on the train so that’s how they planned to get home… after a few more beers.
I’m going to be honest, it wasn’t my idea of the perfect day, cars just don’t turn me on. What I did love is that blogging had given me the opportunity to experience something different and share a day I’ll always remember with friends.
Please note: V8 Supercars only gifted me the tickets to attend, I was not paid for this post or compensated in anyway.
