There is something splendid about summer and even though I’m strapped for cash (the new couch was finally delivered!) I didn’t want that to stop me from living fabulously. Usually I’d be quite content hiding away inside with the air conditioner but with Stephanie here I seem to have a constant urge to do frivolous, girly, sisterly things. She leaves next week and I’m trying my best not to think about it. You could say doing stuff like this is distracting and right now I’m all for that.
The last two posts I’ve done for Target I’m proud of, I kept true to me, I was painfully honest to you and everyone felt like they were listened to. Trust me, I’m very aware that my words (and yours) are being read by people in a position to change things. I love that you all care as much as I do about helping Moda get an image overhaul and hopefully over the course of the year I’ll be in a position where I can voice your concerns and requests further. This post isn’t about all that though, this post is a bit of fun and just a little bit colourful. I wanted to step away from the clothes and show you some of Target’s fashionable accessories instead.
There is nothing quite as relaxing as chilling out in your own back yard, sprinkler going off behind you, breeze blowing through the trees and feeling the warmth of the sun seeping into your skin. I understand that a lot of my readers are just like me and aren’t flush with cash, we don’t have a pool and we live knee deep in the suburbs (if you have a pool I’ll be right over). Just like my weight, my bank balance and my location cannot dictate how fabulously I live my life. I call the shots.
I wore my City Chic one piece swimmers, a funky boho headband, pretty sparkly crystal necklaces and bracelets, white thongs, a toe ring and a soft sheer lace scarf as a sarong. To set up our little backyard party I had to scrounge around the house for a few things but then I used the $100 Target Gift Card I was sent to buy the rest. The umbrella was a bargain purchase from Aldi last year, it was Danimezza blue… I had to buy it. I dragged out my Moroccan Pouffe from Table Tonic, my new Ezibuy cushions that I got on sale, my Camilla cushion that Donny Galella gave me after the Camilla Runway Show and a few other essentials like my phone, diary and latest Grazia magazine… oh and my sippy cup.
It was late afternoon so I didn’t want to go to heavy on the snacks, just lots of fruit and some colourful gumballs for a bit of fun. I had no idea Target sold lollies and they were so cheap! Afternoon tea looked ultra fancy in my Tupperware server and I loved that it matched the esky.
Two years ago when I was caught up in the mothers group Tupperware circuit I’d bought an acid lime and cobolt blue picnic set which had all the little plastic boxes and plates and things that you could dream of so when I saw the acid lime esky in Target on sale I had to have it. It fits bottles of wine and bubbles and 1.25 litre bottles in perfectly and has been great on long drives in the car. I know it’s not exactly a “fashion accessory” but it is kind of, almost like a big handbag? All I know is that I love how funky it looks.
Can you tell I’m a details person? The tray on the pouffe was an accidental find in Target, one of Jamie Olivers extra large melamine platter’s. I thought I’d only use it occasionally but so far I’ve used it everyday, whether it be on the dining table, turning my pouffe into a coffee table or taking snacks to everyone outside in the paddle pool, the best bargain buy yet!
I laid in the sun, dreaming of what I’d do this year, the plans I’d make, the places I’d go, the people I hoped to meet. I contemplated life in the sunshine and I felt gorgeous. Yes, I was still in my backyard, yes I still lived in the suburbs and yes I still didn’t have much money but I forgot about all of that and just enjoyed where I was and what I made of it.
Steph took loads of pictures and then we chilled out for awhile. It was nice to relax and even work outside. Aidan took it as his cue to eat all the food. My skin, even though it was slathered with sunscreen, decided it would go a glowing shade of pink. I knew it was time to move into the shade but I was tired of rocking the moon tan and the sun was making me feel happy and sleepy all at once.
I looked down at my new beach towel, the soft thick Egyptian cotton felt wonderful and I was glad I splurged almost half my budget on it. It is huge and I love the bold bright stripes of colour. No mater how great my swimwear is I almost always end up wrapped up in my towel anyway so it may as well be gorgeous! As I admired the towel I looked at my toes and thought that with all the running I’d started to do they were left looking a little worse for wear. They needed some pampering, a bit of a scrub and a new colour polish. It was time to take this party one step further into girlie territory… lucky I’d planned ahead.
We moved our little party into the shade, put the food away, cracked out the tools and polish and set up the basin. It was at that moment when I made a mental note to compliment Steve on his grass, even if his whipper snipper was busted. It was lovely, thick and cool to lie on.
I’d been looking for a nice basin for my feet (running = blisters) so when I found this one in the laundry section of Target I got a little bit more excited than I should have. I filled it with warm water and put in a few drops of my Warming Eucalyptus Molten Brown bath gel, seriously that stuff is heaven. I was sent the Global Travel Giftset before Christmas and it’s better than a box of chocolates.
The platter was then turned into a prepping station, holding all the tools I’d need to do the job. I picked up a nifty nail kit from the cosmetics section in Target for $8 that had all the scissors, files, clippers, brushes and things I’d need to prep for a mani-pedi. The sweet blue floral tin holds all my cotton pads, I picked it up from the op shop a few years ago. I like to keep all my beauty things organised so when I saw this funky little cork bag (yes, cork) with hot pink patent details all alone on the bottom shelf, on sale at Target I just had to have it. Everything fits in it just as it should and let me tell you, it makes the whole process of doing my toes a lot more fun.
While I was waiting for my feet to soak I decided to paint my nails. When I was in the beauty section I also picked up a new polish, “French Riviera” by L’Oreal Color Riche. I adore the soft, cool blue shade and the very slight glimmer. These mini bottles are 5ml and cost less than $7 but that’s not why I love them. The polish is thick and doesn’t flake, it doesn’t even require a top coat but best of all is the brush. It’s soft and has a flat dome, just like the Dior Vernis bottles have. They apply polish better than any other brush I’ve tried.
Soon my feet for well and truly soaked and the eucalyptus left me feeling warm and cool all at the same time, I think the word I’m looking for is refreshed. I would have stayed in longer if I didn’t have to make dinner. Yes, you can imagine and pretend that you’re somewhere else more fabulous but at the end of the day there are still mundane things that need your attention.
A quick little pedicure and I was done, the colour almost left me looking like I had a tan, I was just glad I didn’t get any on my new towel. I still wear the toe ring around the house, it’s from Diva and it makes me think of Eden and her travels to India. It also makes me think back to when I was 10 and my dad said I wasn’t allowed to wear toe rings because it could rip my toe off. Did your parents ever tell you stuff like that?
