On Monday Aidan and I were flown down to Melbourne for the day to attend the Kmart Spring/Summer Fashion Launch. It was very exciting for Aidan who was pumped about it for days, I on the other hand was worried about the logistics and possible public tantrums from over tiredness. I needn’t have worried because he was an absolute superstar the whole trip, up and out of his bed at 4am and back in it by 9:30pm.
We arrived just as everyone was finding seats for the show. The event was held in a highly styled storage room at the back of the Kmart Southland store, it really did look amazing. I barely made it around the room to take photos, I could have instagramed everything!

In fact Aidan did most of the instagraming that day. I took snaps on my Canon and handed him my iPhone asking if he’d like to do the same, to take a photo of anything he liked and as many as he liked. He was a total pro, framing his arms to steady the camera… just like me. Breathing out for the trigger… just like me. Letting out a yelp when he got the shot he envisaged… just like me.

I sat grinning ear to ear because I realised he was watching me, really watching and learning when I worked, better yet he enjoyed it for his own reasons. I of course immediately imagined him as a twenty year old attending shows with me in Milan and making out with models back stage when I wasn’t looking… because that’s just what mum’s fret about when their son is four.
I used to shy away from photographers at events but now I’m more likely to pull them aside and ask for an outfit photo or to take a group shot with friends I rarely get to see. This time I knew I’d be too busy yapping to be snapping and I really wanted a good photo of Aidan and I… pity I was the only one who got the memo. It still makes me happy looking at it though. I’m proud that I can involve him in my work and this captures that feeling, plus we’re being photo bombed by a giant metal giraffe.
Aidan doesn’t look like he’s enjoying himself but he was, he just wolfed down two cupcakes and I think this face shows a tinge of regret. Moments later the lovely Rachel’s posse took him under their wing so we could keep chatting. I never get to see her so I wanted to soak up every moment I could. I wish all my favourite bloggers lived in my street so our kids could play.

I also managed to catch up with Jamela from Women’s Weekly and she asked to take a snap of my outfit… and yet again I’m photo bombed by the giraffe. The dress is by Jones of New York, a lovely print wrap dress I picked up at Macy’s. I wanted something comfortable as I’d be in it all day long, prints hide stains (travelling with a child they’re unavoidable) and as I’d be bending over a lot to tend to him I wanted my bust, arms and legs covered, especially with cameras at every angle! This is one of my power dresses, I think everyone woman should have at least one of them.
The show was a lot of fun and really relaxed. All the models were friends, family or employees of Kmart and they all goofed around. Aidan was in fits of giggles at one point. The family friendly and fun environment of Kmart was really captured within the presentation. There were a lot of different outfits for women, men and kids on show but I really wanted to share my take on the plus size selection.
First Look: The first thing that struck me about this outfit was the pants… and then the bag… and then the shoes. I loved the clashing of prints and best of all they looked easy to wear, slip on and go kind of clothes.
Second Look: The dark denim peddle pushers are cute and functional, I have a few similar pairs in my wardrobe and they get constant wear. The neon orange and blue blouse looked really pretty and I liked the coordinating flats.
Third Look: As soon as it came out I knew Suger would love the chambray and scarf combo, it’s so her. I wasn’t a huge fan of the maxi but I did like the colour. More print clashing with this outfit too, tie-dye and leopard. I really do think you need at least one chambray piece in your wardrobe this summer so if you don’t have one yet this might be for you.
A point that was made throughout the presentation was that you could essentially build most outfits for under $50. I felt a challenge brewing, especially for the plus size department. Unfortunately, for me it kind of failed. I couldn’t find any bottoms that I liked the fit of which was disappointing. All the tops were generously cut and quite shapeless. The plus size section needs some work but they’re on it, things will be changing. I was lucky enough to speak with the newly appointed designer for Plus and she completely agrees and has some grand plans to shake things up. I’m excited for her challenge and I’m excited to see how the Kmart consumers react. Her vision for collections wont truly be seen until this time next year.
Once home and with a $50 gift card in hand I headed in store to create an outfit, something I could throw on today and walk out the door feeling awesome. I picked up a classic plain white tee $4 and got a few sizes up to keep it oversized and casual. I already knew from the show that I wanted this neon splash scarf $7 and I managed to snag the last one at my store. I’d been lusting after a yellow studded clutch $12 and now I have one for summer. I originally wanted a pair of white low wedges but these nude sandals $15 felt like butter on my feet so they came home with me instead. I’d wear this outfit with my Torrid jeggings or my Lane Bryant denim shorts for a colourful, casual chic look. Actually I’m wearing this outfit today as Aidan and I have an event in the city so be sure to keep an eye out on instagram. **CHECK IT OUT HERE**.
I wanted to also share with you all the other things I bought home because I just couldn’t help myself. I got the beautiful rainbow stripe towel $10 which I’d also seen at the show. I may have gone a little crazy in the bags section too and picked up a black and a nude gold chain handbag $15ea as they’re a classic design and easy to wear. I was bummed the chevron totes hadn’t dropped yet, I’ll be keeping an eye out. The mumma-guilt kicked in as I was leaving the store so the shark figurine $5 managed to find it’s way into the trolley too.
Wouldn’t it be nice to duck into Kmart solo, late at night when everyone is sleeping and create your own outfit just like I did? Kmart is currently running an instagram competition (see the pic above) but right here and right now you have the chance to win your very own $50 gift card! Yep I have one card to give to one lucky reader and all you have to do to enter is answer in the comments box below the following question:
Would you buy shoes or a bag? Tell me why…
