Dario Controneo of DARIO Salon, an awesome and celebrated hair stylist (who I’m lucky enough to have worked with in the past) has released a AW14 Hair Trend Report and you can imagine my delight to discover my “hair plan” for the season was totally on point!
“Smudging: Softer than the Ombre and favoured by the likes of Jennifer Anniston and Kate Hudson, ‘Smudging’ exposes the natural underlying pigments in your hair to brighten up your tired re-growth. In simple terms, ‘Smudging’ softens the harshness of your re-growth by blending it into your existing highlights. – Dario”
THAT my friends, is exactly what I’m in the process of doing. Personally I like how Kate and Sienna rock it. My hair is in the ugly transitional phase right now but that’s ok because I know the end result will be worth it. I’m pretty much aiming for Sienna’s look before I head down to Curvy Couture Roadshow but it’s going to take awhile to achieve the end result I’m really after.
I knew before I started that my natural hair colour was a dark blonde, even though it had been hidden for over 10 years. I also knew that it was smattered with coarse white hairs, not grey, white. Thanks stress, thank you very much. Sure, I could continue being a box brunette for the rest of my life and no one would be the wiser but I just really wanted to be blonde, all for totally vain reasons. If you like you can read more about how I went from Brunette to Blonde in another post.
When I took my hair from a 3 to a 10 (yep, I went all the way) it was a dramatic change. After I’d done my at-home-bleaching experiment I was so happy to head back into the salon. I was tired of doing math and my arms ached at the thought. I just didn’t want to think about my hair anymore, I just wanted to zone out for 4 hours and let someone else make my tresses pretty. At my first appointment we took it back down to a 9 and then next an 8.
If I’m honest, I was sick of the maintenance. Yeah, yeah I was warned but my hair didn’t really grow that fast and I didn’t take into account how much my scalp hated salon bleach, apparently the stuff I used at home was much gentler. I started taking Hair, Skin + Nails by Swisse and all of a sudden my hair was really growing and my nails were amazing. I decided that was worth more to me than bleached roots. As you can see, it didn’t take long for the regrowth to appear and the more it did the more I liked the colour.
I wanted more dimension, healthier hair and not such a flat blonde. At my next appointment I told my hairdresser how I felt, showed her a few images and we talked about how we could make it work. Basically I’d made my hair a blank canvas, we could do anything. We discussed putting a darker shade (around a 6-7) all over and then at the next appointment work on highlights but it could damage my ends re-bleaching so that was out.
The other option was to do half a head of really fine foils to blend the roots into the blonde, my white hairs working in my favour. The catch was that it wouldn’t look 100% polished for the first couple of appointments. My natural hair needed time to grow out and once we got a really clear idea of my true colour we could slowly start introducing darker foils to match. I didn’t have anything major on until March and keeping my ends healthy was important to me so I was in.
She told me it would go through an ugly transitional phase but I really wasn’t prepared for that either. It looks horrible right now but I just have to keep think about how much better and how much closer it will be to what I really want at my next appointment… which thankfully, is this week. Don’t get my wrong, I love seeing my natural colour but it’s such a strong contrast that it just looks trashy. Smudging in a colour to blend to two tones will do wonders.
Basically it will start out like Olsen awesomeness, darker smudged roots with subtle depth through the lengths underneath. I’ll still be able to wear my hair extensions without having to dye them, it will look like a soft ombre like in the second photo. As it grows out I’ll have to ombre dye them as my hair will begin to look more and more like the last two photos and that’s what I’m really aiming for. It’s crazy how excited I am about having hair that will match my eye brows!
