Oh hello there, nice to see you! First outfit post on the blog in almost five months, isn’t that crazy?! I found out the hard way this weekend that if you stop taking frequent outfit photos, you seem to forget how to pose and move your body in front of a camera. Thankfully a very patient (and amazing) friend was able to help me out by snapping a few pics on my phone before we headed to lunch at a nearby cafe.
Why am I sharing this pretty basic outfit you ask? Well it’s because of these damn skinny jeans by Avella from BIG W, they’re pure magic! You might have seen me freak out about them on instagram and facebook…
When the new range for Autumn dropped into my local store I decided to take the gamble and try a pair on… Then I made awkward happy noises in the change room and snapped some pictures which I immediately sent to a few girlfriends. So soft and stretchy yet the fabric still felt firm (well firmer than jeggings) and they were really fitted but I’d still recommend trying them on because I found I had to go down a size. I paid the $35 then and there with a huge grin on my face.
As I walked back to my car I excitedly called BIG W’s PR Agency (who I’ve worked with for years) and said to give the design and buying team a high five from me. This post isn’t sponsored, I just haven’t been this excited about the range in awhile and as I suspected there is someone new bringing fresher ideas to the table at head office.
You may be thinking “Whoop-de-doo it’s just BIG W, calm your farm lady!” but it means so much more to me than affordable jeans in a cut I love. For me it’s about accessible, on-trend, affordable plus size fashion. There are approximately 186 BIG W stores across Australia and this includes regional areas. Think of all the women out there that are often restricted to online purchases due to distance, budget or lack of variety and sizes on offer in their local area. I think that deserves a bit of a fist bump don’t you?
After that phone call they asked me if I’d like to pick out a few other things I liked the look of and a week later I received a package with this gorgeous pale blue stripe shirt as well as another outfit I’ll share with you later. Over the past year I’ve had a less than positive relationship with fashion due to my hot flushes, bloating and other gross things which leaves me incredibly uncomfortable so I’ve been collecting more garments made of cotton and breathable fabrics to add to my wardrobe so a shirt like this is fantastic for me.
You may have figured it out already but that’s why it’s been so long between outfit posts. Managing my hormone therapy was always going to be rough, let alone adjusting the rest of my life so if I’m honest, I’m glad I stepped back for awhile because it hasn’t been pretty. I’ve turned so many amazing opportunities and invitations down because I felt that if I couldn’t give 100% it would be a waste of not just their time but mine as well.
I feel like I’m starting to turn a corner. I want to get back to doing what I love and maybe even start to cut myself a bit of lack. I’m not ready to talk in detail about my personal journey so I figured that rather than continually looking at the bare white post box and blinking cursor and feeling guilty, I would accept a few just-for-fun collaborations (I don’t plan to re-start the business side) and get back into the swing of it.
Around that time Vision Direct sent me a pair of sunglasses as a gift and I couldn’t get over how well they went with my outfit. My old favourite white and tan lens sunnies died tragically last year but I’m very happy with their replacement, talk about an upgrade!
I almost turned them down as I thought they just catered for prescription lenses but they have a huge collection of designer sunnies. They were shipped really fast, arrived undamaged in luxe packaging (with certificate) and they even threw in a cloth, spray and tiny screw driver. The only issue I have is making sure my friend doesn’t try to permanently borrow them!
I know this post may be considered a bit “meh” to most but to me, even as I sit here typing at 2am yawning, my body willing me to sleep… I’m smiling. I really do miss this, I miss you. I miss the fun creative open person I used to be. I know I’ll figure out how to be her again, I’ll just be an updated version, all dressed in cotton.
